PONTE VECCHIO
Made up of 3 solid arches, this is the only bridge that has survived since 1345, when it was rebuilt by Neri di Fioravante after the Arno had flooded. Moreover, it is the only bridge that escaped German bombings in 1944. In thé late 1500s, Ferdinando 1 had the shops of the “beccai,” Florentine butchers, replaced with goldsmith shops that still today occupy both of its sides. These shops even preserve their original, traditionai wooden shop shutters. In one of the 2 terraces, you’ll find the Bust of Benvenuto Cellini, a 2Oth century work.
PIAZZA DELLA REPUBBLICA
This square was built between 1885 and 1895 on top of the centuries-old constructions of the Mercato Vecchio and in the area that once was the Roman forum. Overall, the square today seems hke an elegant open-air lounge area with its very refined cafés. However, this square was originally home to the Jewish ghetto, Vasari’s Loggia del Pesce (today located in Piazza dei Ciompi), and various private residences.
V. Micheli is also credited with the triumphal arch and its series of porticos. In 1951, the Column of Abundance was erected here; this column marks the spot where the Roman decumanus and cardus once met.
